A Facebook post falsely claimed that Sen. Risa Hontiveros said people should trust her as president of the Philippines.
Flagged content: The Facebook page “Reaksyon ng Bayan” posted to a pro-Duterte group a quote card with a photo of Hontiveros and with text that she allegedly said.
- Her full name appears in quotes and in bold capital letters at the center of the graphic.
- The quote “Pagkatiwalaan nyo ako bilang Pangulo ng Pilipinas at hindi kayo magsisisi” (trust me as president of the Philippines and you will not regret it.) was placed in the lower half of the graphic with an open quotation mark at its head.
- The poster’s remarks accompanying the image also reads: ‘Luh feeling talaga Nya eh no’
Our debunk: The photo was from Sen. Hontiveros’ Feb. 9 press conference, in which she expressed openness to running for an executive position in 2028. However, she did not explicitly say the quote attributed to her in the image.
- Hontiveros’ official social media channels have made no posts nor direct statements amounting to the quote.
Rewind: On June 5, Akbayan Partylist and allied groups launched the “Risa Na” campaign, publicly endorsing Sen. Hontiveros as a presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.
- Hontiveros is currently serving her second term as senator, which began in 2022.
- On Feb. 7, Vice President Sara Duterte dismissed the impeachment complaint filed by Akbayan, describing it as”politically motivated” and intended to boost Hontiveros’ prospects in the next presidential election.
Why we fact-checked this: Similar fabricated posts are circulating online, particularly in partisan social media groups and pages. This kind of misleading content can easily manipulate voters.
- This post used a real photo to appear credible but contained a fabricated quote, aiming to provoke strong reactions from Facebook users.
Spot the fake: Always verify the original context of a photo using reverse image search through Google Lens.
- Fabricated posts like this often use real images and distort the content to make it appear reliable.
