FACT-CHECK: Fake quote card of Alex Eala about Sara Duterte spreads

CLAIM: A quote card attributed to professional tennis player Alex Eala denying that she wore a green outfit to support Vice President Sara Duterte.

A fake quote card falsely attributed to Filipina tennis star Alex Eala denying that she wore a green outfit to show support for Vice President Sara Duterte spread online amid her participation in the Mubadala DC Open.

Flagged content: The fake quote attributed to Eala reads, “I never wore a green outfit to support VP Sara, that’s a big no for me.”

  • The quote card imitated the graphic layout of GMA News, but rebranded itself as “QNA Integrated News.”
  • At the bottom of the card was a  fake link redirecting the readers to an unverified site.
  • The card also featured a “news update” tag, giving the false impression it was legitimate news content.

Our debunk: There is no record of Eala making this statement in any interview, press conference, or official social media post.

  • In an interview with journalist Dyan Castillejo, Eala said she was the one who chose the color of her attire, but did not mention any political reference behind it.
  • Eala also posted a photo of herself wearing the green attire, but the post did not mention any political statement or reference to Duterte.

Rewind: The fake quote card was made as pro-Duterte social media accounts spread claims that Eala’s green outfit was a show of support for the vice president.

Why we fact-checked this: This card was widely shared on Facebook, particularly on opposition pages “Kapamilya LENI Voting Block 2028” and “1Sambayan Official Volunteers and Support Group.”

  • People in the comments section of these opposition groups have been thanking Eala for her supposed stance.
  • On the other hand, some pro-Duterte supporters have been bashing Eala for the fake statement that she never made. 

Spot the fake: Fact-checkers PressOne.PH, VERA Files and Philstar.com, have addressed various claims about Eala, as she had been a subject of disinformation even before.

  • This content is an example of “news-cycle disinformation” which uses a breaking-news format to make fabricated claims look credible. 
  • Always check the name of the source included in the card as there are several pages mimicking legitimate news organizations.
  • Cross-check information by looking at the timing of the post because some fake quotes and cards are shared right after a controversy or rumor happens. Leigh San Diego
