Supertyphoon ‘Ada’ not within Philippine Area of Responsibility on Jan. 5 and 6

CLAIM: Supertyphoon “Ada” was within the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Jan. 5 and 6, resulting in widespread class suspensions.
RATING: FALSE

An AI-generated video circulating on Facebook falsely claimed that classes in the Philippines were suspended on Jan. 5 and 6 due to a supertyphoon named “Ada” that had entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Flagged Content: The video in question, which was AI-generated, was posted by the Facebook page “Nagkakaisang Pilipino TV Newsline.” It has 159,000 followers.

Our debunk: According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), there were no active tropical cyclones within the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Jan. 5 and 6.

  • Pagasa said weather disturbances in some parts of the Philippines were due to the shear line, the northeast monsoon, and easterlies.
  • Class suspensions were left to local governments. There was no nationwide suspension order from the Department of Education.

Rewind: On January 1, Pagasa released the list of tropical cyclone names for 2026. The name Ada appears under Set II, alongside Francisco, Kiyapo, and Pilandok. However, inclusion in the naming list does not mean a storm exists or has formed.

  • Pagasa assigns these names once a tropical cyclone develops within the PAR.
  • The PAR is the region located in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean that the weather agency monitors for tropical cyclones.

Why we fact-checked this: As of writing, the viral AI-generated video posted on Facebook has garnered significant engagement, with 1,500 likes, 73 comments, 240 shares, and 196,000 views.

Spot the fake: Verify the claim by checking the official website and social media accounts of Pagasa.

  • Check whether credible news outlets have made similar reporting.
  • Look for the original source of the video to determine if it was recycled or repurposed to mislead the public. Rebecca Soto
