CLAIM: Palace has shut down and Vice President Sara Duterte has taken over the presidency.
RATING: FALSE
A Facebook account posted a fake “breaking news” update falsely claiming that the Marcos Jr. presidency has ended and that Vice President Sara Duterte was set to take over.
Flagged content: Facebook User “Mrr Villanueva” posted a collage of images of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Vice President Sara Duterte, and Sen. Imee Marcos, with a clickbait caption.
- The thumbnail text read: “PALASYO NABUWAG NA?”, “PRES SARA MAGTAKE-OVER NA SA PALASYO?”, “COFIRMED! GOODNEWS!”, “ITO PATUNAY ADEK KA! (sic)” (Palace has fallen? President Sara will now take over the palace? Confirmed! Good news! Here is the proof you’re an addict!)
- The caption included: “BREAKING NEWS! HETO NA! SA WAKAS! GRABE! KAKAPASOK LANG NA BALITA! NAGULANTANG ANG LAHAT DITO! (sic)” (Breaking news! This is it! Finally! The news just came in! Everyone was shocked!).
Our debunk: In reality, there has been no change in the country’s top leadership. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. continues to serve as elected president, and his administration remains functioning. The vice presidency is held by Sara Duterte.
- Marcos Jr. uploaded a speech on Dec. 1.
- On Dec. 2, the Presidential Communications Office held a press briefing with the Malacañang Press Corps.
- On the same day, Marcos Jr.’s Facebook page uploaded a weekly recap of the president’s activities across the country, from Nov. 24 to Nov. 28.
Rewind: The clickbait video was uploaded after the Iglesia ni Cristo rally on Nov. 17, where Sen. Imee Marcos delivered a speech accusing her brother, the president, of drug addiction.
- Senator Marcos also lashed out attempts of the Marcos Jr. administration to destroy the Dutertes.
Why we fact-checked this: This is an example of news-cycle disinformation, which mimics breaking news to make bold, but false, claims of resolution or endpoints, such as resignations, arrests, or legal rulings.
- Such claims pollute the public discourse amid volatile political situations.
- As of writing, the post has garnered 466 reactions, 479 comments, and six shares.
Spot the fake: Be cautious of Facebook accounts that thrive on false “breaking news” posts and often imitate online news sources. Dhayshel Tinoy
