An AI-generated video falsely claimed that a rally attended by 32 million people was held on May 12 in Davao City in support of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Flagged content: The video was uploaded to Facebook on May 12 and has since garnered thousands of comments suggesting its audience was unable to identify it as AI-generated.
- The video appears to feature a large crowd gathered with their arms raised while chanting “Itaas ang kamao sa com[ment] sec[tion.]” (“Raise your fists in the comment section.”) Multiple detectors confirmed that the video was AI-generated.
- Hive Moderation concluded that the video was “likely to contain AI-generated or deepfake content.”
- FakeImageDetector.com found 100% likelihood that the video is “computer-generated or modified.”
Our debunk: As of writing, no reputable news organization or government agency has reported on a 32 million-strong rally for the vice president.
- The video also contains several artifacts consistent with AI-generated content.
- The audio of the chants does not match the mouth movements of the people.
- The text on the placards was muddled, containing glaring typos, such as “Davao’s Luady,” “Sara Sadn Duterte,” “322 Sarah Supperters,” and “Savao’s Iron Lady.”
- The figures in the video were inconsistent, with several placards showing 32 million while the LED screen in the background shows 322 million.
Rewind: The video surfaced amid the ongoing impeachment trial against the vice president.
- On May 11, the House of Representatives impeached Duterte for the second time.
- This prompted the Senate to convene as an impeachment court the following week, amid a sudden shift in leadership.
