Reclaiming People Power: PressOnePH’s Fact-Checking of False EDSA narratives

 

Social media remains a battleground for narratives about history, with long-debunked conspiracy theories and misleading claims resurfacing again and again. Many narratives are aimed at changing public perception about the corruption and fall of the Marcos dictatorship and diminishing the civilian-led revolt that ended it.

As the Philippines marks the 40th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, PressOne.PH looks back at its series of fact-checks examining viral videos and recurring assertions that sought to distort what happened before, during, and after EDSA—from claims of foreign orchestration and forced exile to revisionist portrayals of key figures—anchoring each debunking in verified records, historical context, and credible sources.

 

 

In the video we had debunked previously, the discredited former World Bank employee Karen Hudes makes another outlandish claim: that the EDSA People Power Revolution of 1986 was engineered the US Central Intelligence Agency and the Vatican.

In a video that has been viewed 34,000 times, Facebook page “BBM SARA Tv’s” claimed that the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos left the Philippines following the 1986 People Power revolt to prevent violence and bloodshed.

Without proper historical context, videos comparing the orders of two ex-presidents, Ferdinand Marcos during the 1986 EDSA “People Power” Revolution and Cory Aquino during the 1989 coup attempt, are being circulated by Marcos supporters.

Key context was missing in an oft-repeated claim by ex-senator Juan Ponce Enrile that it was Cory Aquino, not Ferdinand Marcos Sr., who was the real dictator when she rolled out a revolutionary constitution following the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.
