JSAP National Conference 2025 to examine journalism’s role in advancing SDGs

The Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines (JSAP) will hold its 2025 National Conference on Dec. 9 at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ Bulwagang Balagtas, focusing on how journalism can strengthen public accountability and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The event, themed “Journalism for a Sustainable Future: Reporting the SDGs, Uncovering the Challenges,” will gather student journalists, educators, and media practitioners for plenary talks and research presentations on key national and global issues.

Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez will deliver the keynote address. Plenary speakers include former University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication dean and cultural critic Roland Tolentino; Manila Standard managing editor Joyce Pañares; broadcast journalist Jiggy Manicad; and Rappler senior reporter Pia Ranada. Their talks will cover corruption, investigative reporting, climate and health risks, disaster communication, and foreign influence operations.

The conference will also feature three parallel research sessions.
Session A: Democracy, Conflict, and Disinformation will tackle territorial disputes, global influence campaigns, and ideological frames in political and humanitarian crises.
Session B: Community, Environment, and Ethical Practice will discuss newsroom safety, environmental accountability, and professional standards.
Session C: Digital Disruptions and the Future of News will examine artificial intelligence, algorithmic visibility, virality, and trust in digital platforms.

Two organizations will lead additional breakout sessions. The Photographers’ Center of the Philippines (PCP) will hold a photo-essay session led by visual storyteller AC Dimatatac on visualizing SDG-related issues and ethical documentation. PressOne.PH will conduct a digital investigations workshop on influence operations and coordinated manipulation, led by Nikko Balbedina III, John Hurt Allauigan, and Leigh Jenessen San Diego.

Student-researchers from various universities are set to present studies on disinformation, community engagement, environmental reporting, media literacy, journalist safety, and other issues affecting the Philippine news landscape.

The JSAP National Conference is one of the country’s annual gatherings focused on journalism scholarship and practice, bringing together participants to assess current challenges and emerging trends in the profession. The 2025 edition is expected to highlight the pressing role of journalists in reporting on development, governance, and digital threats. PressOne.PH
