CLAIM: Kathryn Bernardo criticized President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
RATING: FALSE
Multiple Facebook posts falsely claimed that actress Kathryn Bernardo had criticized President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. over a highly publicized relief operation during the aftermath of typhoon “Tino” in Cebu.
Flagged content: The Facebook page “Banat news” posted a fabricated quote graphic claiming that Bernardo had criticized Marcos Jr. by saying: “Instead of relief goods, PBBM brought a cameraman. I thought there was a shooting.”
- The post included hashtags: #OVPUpdates #OVPUpdates #VPInday #VPSara #DutertePaRin #BanatNews #SNN #followers #DPWH #contractor.
Our debunk: Kathryn Bernardo never made such a statement.
- Star Magic, her talent management agency, released an official statement debunking the fabricated quote on Nov. 11. Min Bernardo, Kathryn’s mother, posted on Instagram, urging the public to stop spreading edited and invented statements using her daughter’s name. She warned that even slight changes “turn into fake news.”
- Kathryn herself reposted Star Magic’s clarification on her Instagram Stories, reinforcing that the viral remark did not come from her. This served as a direct signal to fans that the circulating quote was false and not connected to her in any way, further shutting down the misleading claim.
Image source: The image used in the false post was originally published by the Philippine Information Agency – Region 7 and was taken during Marcos Jr.’s visit to Liloan, Cebu on Nov. 7, after Tino ravaged the province.
- The cameramen, visible in the image, were media personnel covering the event, not individuals “brought” by Marcos Jr.
Rewind: The fake quote card was posted on Facebook, Nov. 11, with other pages misrepresenting the actress Kathryn Bernardo by fabricating a supposed criticism of Marcos Jr.
- While Bernardo supported opposition candidate Leni Robredo in the 2022 presidential elections, she has not been vocal about other politicians.
Why we fact-checked this: As of writing, the viral post has drawn 3,600 reactions, 1,500 comments, and 250 shares.
Spot the fake: Verify the claim by checking the official account of the person the post is referring to.
- Check verified accounts of politicians and personalities for any matching statement.
- Confirm whether credible news outlets have reported the quote. Rebecca Soto
