CLAIM: Cynthia Villar blamed Risa Hontiveros for the homeless situation of Filipinos.
RATING: FALSE
A Facebook reel falsely claimed that Sen. Risa Hontiveros was the reason for the large percentage of homeless Filipinos, adding that Sen. Cynthia Villar had blamed it on her.
Flagged content: A resurfaced video of a heated discussion between the two senators was used to show that Hontiveros was prevented from talking by Villar. The video has an overlay text that falsely claims: “Riza (sic) pala ang may sala bakit Marami homeless ang pinas! Sapol kay Cynthia.”
(“It is Risa’s fault that there are so many homeless people in the Philippines! Bullseye by Cynthia.”)
Our debunk: The altered videos were grabbed from the Senate’s budget deliberation on Nov. 12, 2024, tackling the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development’s (DHSUD) construction of condominiums for its housing projects.
- On Nov. 18, 2024, Hontiveros made it clear that the circulating information about her being asked about the financial benefits of the housing project was completely false.
- “It was the contractors who were put into question,” she said.
- Moreover, in her own press release, Villar did not explicitly state that Hontiveros was responsible or at fault for the issue.
Why we fact-checked this: As of writing, the video has accumulated some 483,000 views, 17,000 reactions, and 2,700 shares. Azriel Gilson Dela Cruz
