FACT-CHECK: Baste Duterte did not volunteer to become Defense Secretary

An X user shared a manipulated quote card that featured a made-up quote from Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte

CLAIM: Sebastian Duterte volunteered to become secretary of defense

RATING: FALSE

An X user shared a manipulated quote card that featured a made-up quote from Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte.

In a post, X user Pinay Avengers, shared a manipulated quote card from SMNI’s Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa, the weekly TV program of the mayor’s father, former president Rodrigo Duterte.

Baste Duterte allegedly said that he would volunteer to become secretary of national defense should another Duterte become president in 2028.

There is no evidence that the Davao City mayor made this statement on Sept. 18. The social media accounts of Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa do not contain this material as well.

The quote card that the X user used was manipulated from the original quote card posted by SMNI in March. Rommel Lopez
