FACT-CHECK: Defense secretary still on Marcos Jr. cabinet

CLAIM: Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro has left the Marcos Jr. cabinet out of disgust.

RATING: FALSE

Various posts on Facebook and YouTube spread rumors that Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro has left his post as secretary of the Department of National Defense.

The rumors started after the replacement of Cheloy Garafil as chief of the Presidential Communications Office.

In a press conference on Sept. 12, Teodoro denied the rumors and said he had no intention of leaving his post.

Teodoro also said he would pursue President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s objective of protecting Philippine territory, amid China’s aggressive moves in the West Philippine Sea.

DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong issued a statement denying the rumors and urged the public to guard against disinformation.

In Navotas, Marcos Jr. said talk of Teodoro’s departure from his cabinet was “fake, fake, fake, fake, fake, fake news,” and called those who spread rumors “desperate” to create chaos.

As of writing, manipulated videos on YouTube shared by user accounts Ed Alunan and Ramon Cagas on Facebook have been taken down following Teodoro’s statement. Leigh San Diego
