FACT-CHECK: ‘Bagyong Dindo’ is not expected to land on the Philippines this weekend

CLAIM: ‘Bagyong Dindo’ will make landfall on the Philippines this weekend.
RATING: FALSE

A Facebook post falsely claimed on July 25 that a low-pressure area (LPA) would soon develop into a typhoon, named “Dindo,” and would make landfall on the Philippines this weekend.

The page Metro Headlines Ph has misled thousands of netizens by posting this fake news item.

This false announcement was proven wrong by the public weather forecast issued at 4:00 a.m. on July 26, 2024, uploaded by the DOST-PAGASA Weather Report.

It stated that there was only a slim chance for this LPA to become a typhoon and that the weather system would likely keep its distance from the country.

Though it will not become a typhoon, it will still cause cloudy weather in the eastern section of the country starting Sunday. Clear weather is expected in the western section.

It was also clearly announced that the LPA, which will only be named “Dindo” once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility, will not strike the Philippines this weekend.

As of this writing, the false Facebook post has garnered 8,000 reactions, 395 comments, and 39,000 shares. Sofia Abarquez
