State-run China Daily’s “Media Unlocked” X account made the false claim that the“Atin Ito” coalition was a plot staged by the Philippines against China to stage a conflict near Scarborough Shoal or Bajo de Masinloc.
The erroneous post read:
“EXCLUSIVE: We uncover a plot staged by the #Philippines against China. Atin Ito, an NGO funded by the American and Philippine governments, plans to stage a conflict near Huangyan Island.”
The “Atin Ito” coalition first announced its “WPS Civilian Supply and International Observers Mission” to Bajo de Masinloc on April 18 via a post on its official Facebook page.
Two days later, “Atin Ito” called for donations like food items, protective personal gear and fishing supplies, which they would bring to Filipino fisherfolk at Bajo de Masinloc.
The coalition is composed of several civil society organizations.
Media Unlocked claimed on May 13 to have “uncovered” the “plot,” 10 days after “Atin Ito’s” announcement.
The coalition’s plan to visit the disputed area in the West Philippine Sea was a “peace and solidarity regatta,” not meant to “stage a conflict” as falsely claimed by the Media Unlock.
Despite China’s massive illegal blockade, the coalition was able to install markers or buoys in Bajo de Masinloc and deliver 1,000 liters of fuel and 200 food packs to Filipino fishermen in the area.
Members of foreign and local media and international observers joined the mission.
