FACT-CHECK: Quiboloy’s church is not the second largest non-Catholic Christian church in the Philippines

Manila Times columnist Rigoberto Tiglao made the false claim that Pastor Apollo Quiboloy’s Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name, Inc. is the non-Catholic Christian denomination with the second largest number of adherents in the Philippines.

CLAIM: Apollo Quiboloy’s church is the second largest non-Catholic Christian church in the Philippines

RATING: FALSE

Manila Times columnist Rigoberto Tiglao made the false claim that Pastor Apollo Quiboloy’s Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name, Inc. is the non-Catholic Christian denomination with the second largest number of adherents in the Philippines.

In his blog posted on Feb. 28, Tiglao wrote:

“EVANGELIST Apollo Quiboloy, who heads the second largest non-Catholic Christian church in the country, has called for the ouster of President Marcos and First Lady Lisa Marcos.”

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority’s 2020 Census of Population and Housing, the non-Catholic Christian denomination with the second largest number of adherents in the country is the Seventh Day Adventist Church with 862,725 followers. It trails the Iglesia ni Cristo which has 2.8 million adherents in the country.

While Quiboloy’s KJC claims to have more than “5 million true believers, including 2 million abroad,” a claim that Tiglao mentioned in his blog post, this cannot be independently verified.

The PSA census is more credible in this case. Rommel F. Lopez
