A manipulated photo of former President Rodrigo Duterte, looking noticeably thin in a hospital gown while lying in a hospital bed, has surfaced online.
The photo was shared across various social media platforms, with many users commenting that Duterte appears to be unwell.
The photo also featured text that read, “My prayers are always with you,” expressing support for Duterte’s well-being.
However, the photo showed several signs of manipulation. Duterte’s face and skin texture appeared to be noticeably unnatural, and his head looked as if it had simply been placed on the pillow.
The lighting on his face did not match the lighting on his body or the surrounding environment.
Additionally, the image was blurry and displayed several blending errors. The medical tube supposedly inserted into his neck appeared improperly placed and was not securely taped, inconsistent with standard medical procedures.
On July 11, Vice President Sara Duterte said the photo of her father circulating on social media was fake.
She said the photo was most likely edited, saying it could be a different patient with Duterte’s face just superimposed on it.
The former president was detained by the International Criminal Court on March 12 and has since been in The Hague, Netherlands, facing charges of crimes against humanity.
A request for Duterte’s interim release was filed by his counsel, but the ICC has not yet approved it.
On July 10, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano filed a resolution asking the Philippine government to request the ICC to transfer Duterte’s custody to the Philippine Embassy in The Hague, where he could be placed under house arrest or a similar setup approved by the Court.
Duterte is scheduled to stand trial on Sept. 23.
As of writing, the manipulated photo has been reshared to different social media platforms and has amassed 307,000 reactions, 56,900 comments, 25,000 shares on Facebook, and 83,722 reactions, 4,100 shares, 1,300 comments on TikTok. Leigh San Diego
