FACT-CHECK: Impeachment case against vice president still alive

CLAIM: The impeachment process against Vice President Sara Duterte is “finished.”

A YouTube video falsely claimed that the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte was already “finished.”

The video featured different clips from Facebook Live of former Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner Rowena Guanzon as “evidence.”

These were spliced with news clips about the impeachment. The video was titled, “KAKAPASOK LANG! FINISH NA ang impeachment laban kay vp Sara Duterte !”

(“Just In! Impeachment against VP Sara Duterte is now finished.”)

However, contrary to the claim, the impeachment case against Duterte is still ongoing.

Senate President Francis Escudero has clarified that the decision of the impeachment court to return the articles of impeachment to the House of Representatives did not equate to the dismissal of the case or termination of the impeachment trial.

Moreover, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said in f an interview with radio station DZBB Super Radyo that the impeachment trial would cross over from the current 19th Congress to the 20th Congress.

On June 11, Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro, a member of the House panel of prosecutors, said in a press conference that the impeachment court’s summons indicated the court’s jurisdiction over the case and that the impeachment trial had commenced.
