FACT-CHECK: Vice President Sara Duterte shook hands with Sen. Bong Go

CLAIM: Vice President Sara Duterte did not shake hands with Sen. Bong Go.

RATING: FALSE

A video of Vice President Sara Duterte and Sen. Bong Go has circulated on Facebook, falsely claiming that the vice president avoided shaking hands with Go.

The widely shared video happened when the vice president, in place of her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, endorsed 10 senatorial candidates, otherwise known as the DuterTEN, in a PDP rally at Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila on May 8.

Netizens reacted and asserted, “Kawawa naman si Bong Go.” (What a pity for Bong Go).

PressOne.PH found that a Facebook vlogger named “Tito James” deceptively posted a cropped video of Duterte and Go shaking hands, adding himself via green screen to mock Go with the whispered comment: “Kung ako sa’yo, bawian ko ‘yan sa impeachment, tapos lilipat ako ng partido,” referencing the pending impeachment trial of the vice president.

(“If I were you, I’d retaliate in the impeachment proceedings, then switch parties.”)

In Rappler’s full-length YouTube video of the miting de avance, a wide-angle shot clearly shows Duterte initiating a handshake, contradicting the false claims.

Another video clip posted by a Facebook vlogger, “Katotong Ofw Anaboy Kamsa,” showed that Duterte and Go shook hands.

At the proclamation ceremony held on May 17, Go, who made history as the first senator in the Philippines to garner over 27 million votes, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Dutertes for their support throughout his career.

On May 25, Go posted a photo with the vice president on his Instagram account,  with a caption acknowledging her support for DuterTEN.

“Walang hanggan ang pasasalamat ko sa pamilyang Duterte at saludo ako kay VP Inday Sara na tumayong lider namin sa panahong nangungulila ang sambayanang Pilipino,” Go said.

(“My gratitude to the Duterte family is boundless, and I salute VP Inday Sara for stepping up as our leader during a time of national despair.”)

As of posting, the edited video has garnered 14,600 reactions, 1,500 comments, 3,500 shares, and a million views. Jamaica Cabilis
