CLAIM: ICC prosecutor Karim Khan granted Duterte’s motion to return to the Philippines
RATING: SATIRE
A TikTok video posted by satirical page “Balat Sibuyas” on May 5 claimed that International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan had approved a motion to release former president Rodrigo Duterte to “discipline his misbehaving children.”
The video reel has garnered 23,700 reactions and 1,300 shares as of writing. Several Facebook accounts have reposted the same content, cropping the original poster and the satirical tag, which can misinform netizens.
Balat Sibuyas is a multi-platform satirical page with content poking fun at political happenings in the Philippines, running with the tagline “Balitang hindi totoo, pero dapat sineseryoso.”
Based on court records of the ICC accessible online, there were no motions from the Duterte counsel to release the detained former president, which means there was no way for the prosecution to facilitate his return to the Philippines.
Furthermore, Khan filed an administrative leave from the court on May 19 due to allegations of sexual misconduct, passing Duterte’s case to one of his deputies, Mame Mandiaye Niang.
Therefore, Khan could not act on such motions. Marc Nathaniel Servo
