CLAIM: Senators have resigned after the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
RATING: FALSE
A TikTok video falsely claimed that some senators have resigned to protest the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
The video included a text that read “anu na mangyayari sa pilipinas halos lahat ng mga official nag resigned [sic] salute.” (What will happen to the Philippines if almost all officials resign? Salute!)
The video contained stitched clips from the statements of Senators Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, Joel Villanueva, Abby Binay, Sonny Angara, and JV Ejercito.
However, based on the official YouTube channel of the Senate of the Philippines, the clips were not recent and were compiled from Senate Session No. 75 held on May 20, 2024.
During that session, Zubiri stepped down as Senate President, followed by Angara, Binay, Ejercito, and Villanueva, who all resigned from their respective committee leadership positions in the 19th Congress.
Their resignations as Senate president and committee chairpersons were not due to the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte and did not mean they had resigned as senators.
All active senators of the 19th Congress are listed on the official website of the Senate in the Philippines.
Angara is no longer on the list of active senators, as he was appointed secretary of education by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on July 19, 2024.
As of this writing, the TikTok video has garnered 960,800 views, 53,700 reactions, 2,226 comments, 6,297 bookmarks, and was shared 4,425 times. Michael Hermoso – Bautista
