FACT-CHECK: Plans for new LRT-1 train sets started before Marcos admin

CLAIM: The Marcos administration added 76 new and modern train sets for LRT-1
RATING: FALSE

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. falsely implied that his government added 76 new cars to the LRT-1 line in his third State of the Nation Address.

“Nagdagdag din tayo ng 76 na bago at modernong tren sa LRT 1 upang mas dumami, bumilis, at mas maging komportable ang biyahe ang mga pasahero.”

However, the contract between the Department of Transportation and Mitsubishi Corp. was finalized in 2017 during the Duterte administration.

In addition, as early as 2013, the government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement amounting to 43.252 billion yen for the “Capacity Enhancement of Mass Transit Systems in Metro Manila Project,” which includes the new rolling stocks for LRT 1.

It was only during the Marcos administration that the new train sets started to operate. Raniel Paquingan
