Kidapawan Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo’s notice to the public after the Facebook page of the Diocese of Kidapawan has been hacked.
Senator Risa Hontiveros filed a resolution seeking a Senate investigation into the recent spate of social media-related hacking, illegal access, and other cybersecurity-related breaches.
Under PSR No. 777, Hontiveros said senators have been receiving complaints from constituents regarding their social media accounts getting hacked or taken over inexplicably, then used for fraud or sharing pornographic material without the account holder’s permission.
The resolution cited the hacking cases mentioned in a report by PressOnePH such as the livestreaming YouTube channel of Radio Veritas, the Facebook page and accounts of priests of the Diocese of Antipolo and the Facebook accounts of the Diocese of Kidapawan and its bishop, Most Rev. Jose Colin Bagaforo, D.D.
Hontiveros laments that cybersecurity breaches continue to rise despite the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 and the Department of Information and Communications Technology Act of 2015.
The senator is calling for the investigation to craft legislation that would give social media users a more effective way of finding prompt and sufficient recourse to prevent these types of cybersecurity breaches. — Rommel F. Lopez
