Award-winning director Eduardo “Edong” Roy Jr. has passed away due to lymphoma or cancer of the lymphatic system, on Monday, February 21, 2022.

He is only 41 years old.

Edong’s sister Myla Roy confirmed the director’s passing through an official statement he sent to PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) this Wednesday afternoon, February 23.

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Eduardo ‘Edong’ Roy Jr. on February 21, 2022 at the Saint Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. He has been diagnosed with Lymphoma last year.

“Edong was a beloved son, brother, and friend. He was the writer and director of local and internationally acclaimed award winning films such as Bahay Bata, Quick Change, Pamilya Ordinaryo, Lola Igna, Fuccbois.

“A wake will be held on February 24 to 26, 2022 at the Arlington Memorial Chapels Hall A in G. Araneta Avenue, Quezon City.”

Roy’s first project as film director was the Cinemalaya 2011 entry Bahay Bata. It was starring Diana Zubiri who won best performer in the Young Critics Circle for her nurse role.

Bahay Bata won the Jury Prize at the 2012 Deauville Asian Film Festival in Deauville, France; and Best First Time Director for Roy at the 2012 Las Palmas Film Festival of Gran Canaria, Spain.

His other award-winning films are Family Ordinary (2016), Fuccbois, and Lola Igna (2019).

Roy was named Best Director at Cinemalaya 2019 for Fuccbois.

On TV, he has directed several episodes of the drama anthologies Wagas, Ipaglaban Mo, and Maalaala Mo Kaya; and the BL series Oh, Mando!
