CLAIM: Kabataan party-list Rep. Renee Co blamed Vice President Sara Duterte for the fire that broke out at the DPWH building in Quezon City.
RATING: FALSE
A Facebook post falsely claimed that Kabataan party-list Rep. Renee Co blamed Vice President Sara Duterte for the fire that burned the Department of Public Works and Highways office in Quezon City on Oct. 22.
Flagged content: A Facebook post by “kitty Veronica Duterte,” uploaded on Oct. 23, falsely claimed that Co wanted Duterte to be held liable for the fire in the DPWH office.
- The post is captioned, “Bata kapa (sic), madami kapang kakaining bigas Renee Kulot😂 (sic) REP. REENE CO GUSTONG PANAGUTIN SI VP INDAY SARA SA PAGKASUNOG NG DPWH OFFICE.” (You’re young, you still have a long way to go, “Renee kulot.”)
- The photo shows an overlay text that reads, “ISINISISI NI REP. REENE CO SINA VP INDAY SARA AT IBA PANG OPISYAL NG GOBYERNO ANG TRAHEDYANG NAG DULOT NG PAGKASUNOG NG DPWH OFFICE.” (Rep. Renee Co is blaming VP Inday Sara [Duterte] and other government officials in the tragedy caused by the DPWH office fire.”)
Our debunk: No official statement or interview has shown Co explicitly blaming Duterte for the fire that engulfed the research and standards building of the DPWH compound in Quezon City.
- On Oct. 22–23, Kabataan only posted Co’s statement about the Pulse Asia data survey and her visit to the Bulacan Rep. Ador Pleyto.
- Co’s Facebook account has not released or posted any official statement regarding the DPWH fire.
- On Oct. 23, Co only posted about her SALN disclosure.
- There is also no post from Koalisyong Makabayan, to which Kabataan party-list belongs, regarding the matter on Oct. 22-23.
Rewind: On May 19, Co was officially proclaimed as Kabataan party-list representative.
- On Aug. 11, Co challenged Duterte to show up in budget hearings.
- On Sept. 16, Duterte questioned Renee Co’s connection to Zaldy Co during the committee hearing for the OVP budget. The two are not related.
